Ceasefire has been agreed in Ethipia. How much credit do we give to Omar al Bashir who is in Juba now?

Ceasefire has been agreed between the warring parties of President Kiir and former Vice President Machar.

Al Jazeera broke the news in a tweet by one of their Africa Correspondents

#ssudan defence ministry “unilateral declaration of ceasefire btwn SPLA and forces of David Yau Yau to take effect fm 2300 hours 6 jan.”

There has been talk to the effect that Machar was demanding Uganda troops to pull out as a ceasefire condition. Some analysts were arguing that Machar wanted to gain ground first before agreeing ceasefire.

President Kiir on the table had offered unconditional ceasefire to allow the two sides to talk.

Recently, it had become evident that Machar was losing international backing (if he had any) after regional block IGAD issued an ultimatum for him to accept ceasefire or face attack.

ICC has indicated that crimes against humanity committed by both side cannot go unpunished.

UN estimates that about 200,000 people have been displaced and more that 2000 might have been killed.
